Messmore Cliff

Sean Lewis, Thomas Duselis

Late Friday evening, Sean proclaimed his excitement as my car off-roaded its way through the bumps and puddles back to Messmore cliff.  I parked about a quarter mile from the cliff.  Tom, Sean, and I collected our camping and vertical gear and began the hike to our campsite.  We set up our tent overlooking the cliff and I rigged a rope.

I descended first.  I'd never rappelled in sandals before but found my Puerto Rican sandals fit for the job.  I called "Off Rope!" and set my camera up to photograph Tom and Sean's descent.  They ascended the hill to rappell again while I set up a different angle below.  While I was waiting, the strangest noise filled the valley.  At first, I thought it was an airplane but I expect it was really a car.  The noise grew louder and I couldn't help but perceive it as an impending threat.  Luckily, the eerie noise soon disappeared.  I rappelled the cliff once more before bed.  We left the rope rigged for our morning descent.

I didn't sleep very comfortably and woke early the next morning.  Sean and Tom didn't show signs of rising so I got up and dawned my vertical gear and camera in preparation for the morning 100 ft rappell. The early morning sun was quite brilliant.  I enjoyed my rappell and climbed back up the cliff taking a couple pictures in route.   Eventually, Tom and Sean awoke and we each dropped the cliff once more before packing up and hiking out.

Moonlit

We each dropped Messmore twice by moonlight.
