Carcass Crypt

Sean Lewis, Mike Murphy

Spiral Pit was evading us so we left the property and went to visit Carcass Crypt.  It was almost right off the road.  As we walked around to the pit, I immediately saw that this was going to be a nice pit.  The entrance was almost triangle shaped with each side of the triangle being around 7 feet.  I rappelled down pushing off the wall and emerged into a large, tall room.   Mike said he’d previously taped the pit at 67’ but that it used to be 90’.  I could see how that could have been the case because the floor sloped down many feet further all directions.

There had recently been a cleanup here and they did a good job.  I don’t remember how many tons of trash they removed but it was a lot.  Mike said there used to be a butcher barn near the pit and the butcher threw all the cow leftovers into the pit and later tore the barn down and threw it in too.  Anyway, we went down the slope to the left and followed a tall canyon shaped passage.  There was some nice popcorn along the walls.  The walls also had a really neat texture to them.  I wondered if it was because the limestone was more thinly bedded here.  Anyway, the walking passage ended in a 60’ dome that was rather impressive.  We went back to the main room and I poked into some of the outer corners.  To the right of the entrance there looked to be another rope drop but we didn’t pursue that further.  We climbed out and it was time for Mike to take off.

Sean and I wanted to do Mccart’s Pit Cave.  Spike said that he’d recently talked to a new owner of the cave and he’d told me which house to go to.  Unfortunately, they weren’t home so we’ll have to visit Mccart’s Pit Cave another day.  We drove home and I was disappointed that the Simpson’s Halloween special isn’t actually on Halloween.
