I woke up at 7:10 AM the next morning to bright sunlight piercing through the large window (my alarm clock). I didn’t really know what I wanted to do but eventually decided to head west to the beaches along the gulf coast. The way to Caspersen Beach wasn’t immediately apparent but I soon found it. Again irritated by Florida traffic infrastructure, I began my beach walk. I photographed the waves coming into shore and almost got my feet wet a couple times. Tides are tricky. I walked south along the Manasota Key beach barefoot looking for shells. Eventually boring of that, I retreated to the woods and began hiking the secluded trail back. I worked my way down to wet sand alongside the channel between key and land and walked it awhile identifying bobcat tracks. After climbing back up the steep, sandy embankment I continued toward the car. Not far ahead, I spotted movement on the trail. Two cats walked 50 feet ahead of me unaware of my presence. When spotted, one of the cats stood looking back at me and after several seconds ran into the woods. I managed to snap a couple pictures from which helped me identify them as bobcat. I’d never seen bobcat in the wild before; cool! I knew I wouldn’t get back at Aunt Martha’s in time for Alan’s arrival but figured they’d enjoy reacquainting so I didn’t hurry. I arrived back around 3:00 PM and found them finishing lunch and talking at the kitchen table. Soon, Alan, Manuel, and I piled in Blackie and drove to Punta Gorda, Manuel’s old home. We visited the Trabue Harbor Walk, looked under the Collier Bridge for fossils, and then walked a few miles in search of his old club house which no longer exist. |
