This morning, we prepared for a day canoeing on Fish Eating Creek. I rode with Aunt Martha. Once there, we loaded our canoes and shuttled through a gate, GPS: NAD27 265638.68 812344.63 +-17, across a private cattle farm to the put-in.
Initially, no one knew quite the right way to go and we ended up doing a little extra paddling before calling to verify that we’d been headed right to begin with. From there, we often walked the canoe through spectacular scenery. We saw several alligators. When entering one of the pooled lakes, I looked ahead and could have probably counted 20 alligators all of whom slowly immersed and disappeared as we neared. We even saw a few alligators entering the brown-red water from land.
Later we spotted a wood stork and I managed to snap a couple pix as it flew away. About ¾ of the way there, Manuel tired of kayaking and Alan took his place. I quickly took control of the stern and we paddled ahead often walking the boat. The trip took longer than normal due to somewhat excessive canoe walking but we all enjoyed it non-the-less. We had the entire river to ourselves until the very end. Near the take out, an alligator waited, watching across the river as kids played and dogs barked near waters edge. We drove back to Aunt Martha’s for Thanksgiving dinner.
Aunt Martha and Hue made a great dinner consisting of: turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, acorn squish, shrimp, and avocado appetizer. I topped it all off with a large chunk of pumpkin pie treating myself on Thanksgiving. Later that evening, I stayed up later than everyone else reading. My body really wanted to sleep at 9:00 but I held out until 12:00 AM.
