Next, we entered Everglades National Park and drove to the Shark Valley Tram Road. While many tourist decide to take a tram around the 10 mile loop, we walked. We saw many more alligators both large and small alongside the trail. One huge alligator lay right on the edge of the road. While watching he lifted up his lower end, shit, and laid back down on top of it. We caught another alligator yawning. I took many pictures of the yawning alligator. We soon arrived at the Otter Cave Hammock trail, GPS: NAD27 254451.44 804600.08 +-12. With water lower than the last time Alan visited, we hoped for a cave entrance but only found exposed bedrock with small pockets and holes big enough for a raccoon. Nearby we noticed a neat green vine with spiny pods. Alan later identified it as a Gray Nicker Bean Vine because of the gray bean inside the spiny pod. We spotted several Heron and Anhingas along the Shark Valley Tram Road. Alan kept trying to get a shot of a flying heron. About 2.5 miles down the road, we turned around and walked back. On the way out, I saw a white-tailed deer. We looped around to another section of the Tram Road on the Bobcat Boardwalk and saw a couple crows. Then we went back to camp at Burns Lake, GPS: 255334.92 811353.23 +-15. Manuel spent much of the evening trying to get a spark to start a wad of tinder. He got quite good at it. I managed to do it once after several attempts. |
