Castillo del Morro

Brandon Stephens, Marion Smith, Alan Cressler

I woke up and felt very tired this morning.  We spent a few hours cleaning gear and cleaning out the car.  The security guard manning the gate was slacking because he wasn't there and we had to wait around awhile.  I came back and napped for awhile.  Before we left, I popped a couple Tylenol.  We drove into Old San Juan, parked, and started out in search of the fort.  The streets were tight with tall buildings often on each side.  The street was lined with blue bricks which looked really neat.  Sometimes vegetation would hang down from balconies or trees and shroud the road in shadow.  Many shops and restaurants lined the streets.  One area had hoards of pigeons.  Pigeon food was being sold nearby and there were many holes in the fort wall for them to live.  We soon saw the fort.  We had to walk far across a green field to get to it.  The fort was really cool!  IT had multiple levels, tunnels, cannons, beautiful views, and neat architecture.  We toured it for a couple hours, took pictures, and then ate real Puerto Rican food for lunch.  I had a passion fruit ice and Mofongo.  We walked around further looking for sovenirs.  I needed a key chain for my sister and Brandon needed something for his gf.  We ended up at the other fort.  It looked like it was going to rain so Marion paid our way into the fort.  It was pretty cool too.  It had a longer tunnel in it.  It did start raining.  After we toured the fort we sat around hoping the rain would stop and then hiked back to the car.  We also visited a neat graveyard which was packed with ornate graves, many of which were above ground.  Some of the lids had been busted so you could see inside.  However, we saw no dead people.  I expect their bodies burn up pretty fast in the sun-baked tombs.

I really liked the small cylindrical towers on the edge of the fort.

If you look close you can see my Puerto Rican footwear. I love my Puerto Rican sandals. Walmarts finest! There were causing me a little grief though. I had a small blister. I later used a dollar bill to keep them from rubbing the open blister.

Castillo del Morro

I found a sloping tunnel that went down into a dimmly lit room. I believe there was part of a cannon ball embedded in the wall.

A picture of me behind bars. Brandon decided it was his fault we were in jail :) If you know Brandon you may be able to imagine why we might be in jail :)

I decided that we needed to visit the graveyard because it looked really cool. So we hiked along the fort wall until we found a tunnel that led outside to the graveyard.

Castillo del Morro

There were so many graves. All of them were very ornate and most were above ground tombs.

Old San Juan

A very blue, blue brick. I really wanted to know what the bricks were made of.

My lunch! Mofongo. mmmm. I realized that I should have taken the picture before I started eating it when it was too late. It looked much nicer before.

Mofongo

Here is a description of my lunch. I knew I'd never remember what it was called unless I took a picture.

Another rainbow picture. We saw so many rainbows.

Some guy drew this on the wall while he was waiting to be executed.

Alan and Marion check out the drawings on the wall.

Marion and Brandon were plotting to destroy the cruise boat. Unfortunately, the cannon was aimed slightly off.
