Castillo del Morro
Brandon Stephens, Marion Smith, Alan Cressler
I woke up and felt very tired this morning. We spent a few hours cleaning gear and cleaning out the car. The security guard manning the gate was slacking because he wasn't there and we had to wait around awhile. I came back and napped for awhile. Before we left, I popped a couple Tylenol. We drove into Old San Juan, parked, and started out in search of the fort. The streets were tight with tall buildings often on each side. The street was lined with blue bricks which looked really neat. Sometimes vegetation would hang down from balconies or trees and shroud the road in shadow. Many shops and restaurants lined the streets. One area had hoards of pigeons. Pigeon food was being sold nearby and there were many holes in the fort wall for them to live. We soon saw the fort. We had to walk far across a green field to get to it. The fort was really cool! IT had multiple levels, tunnels, cannons, beautiful views, and neat architecture. We toured it for a couple hours, took pictures, and then ate real Puerto Rican food for lunch. I had a passion fruit ice and Mofongo. We walked around further looking for sovenirs. I needed a key chain for my sister and Brandon needed something for his gf. We ended up at the other fort. It looked like it was going to rain so Marion paid our way into the fort. It was pretty cool too. It had a longer tunnel in it. It did start raining. After we toured the fort we sat around hoping the rain would stop and then hiked back to the car. We also visited a neat graveyard which was packed with ornate graves, many of which were above ground. Some of the lids had been busted so you could see inside. However, we saw no dead people. I expect their bodies burn up pretty fast in the sun-baked tombs.
