Cueva Maria Soto

Alan Cressler

We rose early this morning, tore down camp, and drove to Rio Abajo campsite where we parked and set off to find Cueva Maria Soto.  We thrashed through the jungle in around a large sink hole and eventually Alan found the cave.  It turns out that a trail went directly to it.

The entrance to Maria Soto resides at the top of a short trail wup the side of a Mogote.  The shelter entrance was quite sizable likely measuring about 25’ wide and 9 feet tall.  We climbed down through a rather large hole into big walking passage possibly around 20 in diameter.  As I started up some breakdown, I was greeted by the sound of skiddish Puerto Rican bat wings.  The fruit bats were quite large.

I climbed up into a small side room and continued ahead.  We followed nice, easy walking passage for a few hundred feet and looped around the edge of a room with many bats towards the back of the cave.  We had to meet Ron at 9:00 AM so we hiked back out of the cave to the car.   To Cueva Encantado
