Myakka River State Park

My next stop was Myakka River State Park. I pulled into what I thought was the Nature Trail but ended up being a no-name trail just east of the bridge across the river. I followed the trail to a river view and a couple old people joined me and began walking along the river. I retreated back to the woods and ended up bushwhacking my way deep into the woods. The solitude felt good. I decided to take a short cut back which provided over an hour of bush lashing, vine entangling, saw palmetto covered terrain which I tore, ripped, clawed, and fell through until finally reaching the car. I really wanted a machete though it probably wouldn’t have been that useful against the thick ground cover.

I drove to the lake and exited for a few pictures along the shore. Finding the edge of the park, I retraced my path back to the real Nature trail passing camera yielding tourist photographing the destructive hogs. I’d already seen numerous evidence, even in the bush, of the hogs devastating effect on the local surroundings. I hiked the enjoyable nature trail as the light grew dimmer and also checked out the Canopy Walkway and Tower which were kind of cool. A wooden, suspension bridge between two towers gave you a view of the top of the forest canopy. I got to see more resurrection ferns up close. I drove back to Port Charlotte and inquired directions to the local theatre where I watched Casino Royal; awesome!
