From the parking lot, we crested a small hill and almost immediately caught view of the shimmering Rio Grande S’ing into the tall and wide canyon.  We descended back to river level and passed many displayed goods, a poor attempt for some Mexican to make money.  He tried to sell hiking poles and earn money for a school in Boquillas.  I could barely believe that Mexico lay just on the other side of the river!

We hiked riverside near the mouth of the canyon and stopped at a bend where the water flowed swiftly into an eddy.  Doug almost immediately stripped down to his swimming trunks and jumped in.  When Alan arrived the rest of us slowly entered the river riding quickly in the downstream current before swimming back into the eddy.  The cool water provided the perfect fix for the midday sun.

Afterwards, we climbed a sand dune alongside the canyon to a shelter cave.  Paul had previously belly flopped and breast stroked all the way down.  The rest of us were expected to do the same.  I went down first but much to Jeff’s disappointment, I ran down; I didn’t want to get all sandy.

I photographed Manuel and Paul’s descent then we hiked back to the car’s stopping to see some Indian drill holes on the way.  Afterwards, we drove to the Rio Grande Village and stopped by the visitor’s center.
