At 6:05 AM CST, my alarm went off. My hands scrambled around the tent floor finally calming the shrill siren. Darkness still filled the sky. I dressed and departed for Santa Elena Canyon. Once there, I walked the often muddy shoreline trying to avoid losing my foot in the slime until I found a good shot. I took several tripoded shots hopping up and down the river. I left after the sun came up and fully lighting the canyon walls in golden yellow. I noticed that morning that the Jeep’s traction control system slowed the car heightening a feeling of unease; then the 3 lights lit up once it realized it caused more harm than good. The lights warned that the traction control system was off, the antilock brakes no longer worked, and to service the vehicle soon. Great. I passed Alan driving back to camp. He returned to Panther Junction to obtain camping permits for the next two nights. Back at camp, we waited around for a couple hours and later left for Tuff Canyon. |
