Great Salt Lake

I woke up at 4:30 AM and was surprised to see that my mom was already wide awake.  We made excellent time to Indy arriving in about 50 minutes and I got through check in and security in 15 - 20 minutes so once again I got to wait around gate B for my plane to take off.  Eventually, the plane lifted off and I felt surprised to hear that it would take 3 hrs and 22 minutes to arrive in Salt Lake City.  I mostly napped on the way.  As we neared our destination, I looked out the window at the spectacular mountains and soon spotted the Great Salt Lake, my next destination.

We deplaned and I routed through he airport past baggage to the exit.   I passed a very long line waiting for security.  It felt nice outside. I soon found a taxi and road out to the Great Salt Lake.  I felt rather discouraged when I saw it would cost me $27 for an 11 minute drive.  Upon arrival, I hopped out next to the Saltair Pavilion and walked toward the water.  The water level was obviously down so I next had to figure out how to get around all the shallow channels to the waters edge.  I spent over half an hour walking through the slimy sand occasionally hopping over narrow channels and taking pictures until I reached a dead end.  I tried another route and then decided I had no choice.  I took off my shoes and socks and walked barefoot across the cold sand and shallow channels until I reached the waters edge.  My feet warmed as I put my socks and boots back on.  I took several pictures.  I could see far across the damp sand and water to distant mountains.  Across the lake I saw Antelope Island, Stansbury Island, Lake Point, and mountains.  Back toward Salt Lake City, another mountain range loomed up into the low clouds.  After taking more pictures and eating a triple-decker peanut butter and jelly sandwich I followed an old road back to the mainland.  Then I walked along shore and took a few more pictures.  At that point, I was ready to head back and called for a taxi.

Back at the airport, I had no wait at security.  I found my gate and tried to nap while waiting on Alan and Jeff to arrive.  Then we boarded another plane and spent 6.5 hours flying to Kona.  We watched a couple crummy movies, Sky High and the Polar Express.
