Kyle: We drove to the trailhead and took off in the cool morning air. We questioned if we were the only ones to do the peak in the AM. After 1 hour and 15 minutes of scenic hiking, we had ascended 1,500' to reach the summit, elevation 10,600'. The sun felt much warmer at the top although there was some wind. We enjoyed having the summit to ourselves. We descended in 45 minutes. This peak was my favorite peak because the great views of the 3 lakes below, Catherin, Margaret, and Mary, and the mountains stretching in every direction. Brian: We parked at the Catherine Pass trailhead and ascended 2.11 miles up to Sunset Peak averaging 1.8 mph. I agree with the trail difficult rating of moderate as there were some steep sections. The view from atop the peak was exceptional. I really enjoyed standing atop a small summit approximately 24' in diameter. We saw hikers in the distance near Catherine Lake. I took many pictures and couldn't help but photograph Kyle sprawled out exhausted and shirtless atop the peak. I really enjoyed visiting this trail and highly recommend it. Our round trip was half an hour shorter than the estimated time in the description. My only regret was that we didn't spot a bear. Back at the trailhead, I pulled myself up onto some sort of metal platform which was fun. Erin: The views from the trail were absolutely beautiful. There were purple and yellow wildflowers on both sides of the trail. When we made it to the top, I had a great feeling of accomplishment looking into the valley below. The views were amazing and I didn't want to leave! The hike down was just as beautiful. |
