Cascade Falls

Alan Cressler, Jeff Moore

Upon arrival it didn't take long for Alan and I to start out on the trail towards the falls.  We were hauling balls!!!  I usually hike a little over 4 mph on flat ground so I imagine we were hiking 3.5 - 4 mph the whole way up depending on how steep the trail was.  It seemed like a 2 mile hike to the falls.  On our way I accidentally startled some girl who was walking out to the falls to do Yoga.  I'm not sure how she didn't hear us coming up behind her.  Oh well.  Upon arriving, both Alan and I took pictures of the falls.  It was nearly dark when we were done.  The hike back to the car wasn't quite as fast paced given that we couldn't see very well.  It was fully dark when we arrived back at the car.

We had some driving to do before the night was over.  I followed Alan up 219 into West Virginia.  219 is a typical West Virginian road with lots of curves.  Eventually, we got to Lewisburg where we left my car at Shoney's, our meeting spot the next morning, and I navigated to John Stembel's cabin.  We had to back track a little bit because the West Virginian gazetteer indicated a road where there really was only a jeep trail.  Eventually, we found our way through a maze of side roads to his cabin and set up camp.  I was tired but also excited to try the bulb setting on my camera so after I got my sleeping gear laid out I tripoded my camera and used the bulb setting to to take a few night sky pictures.  It was quite dark at the cabin.  The milky way was very well defined.  I was most interested in how much digital noise would be produced from long exposure shots so I shot a 30 second shot as well as a couple minute or two exposures on both ASA 800 and 1600.  The results turned out pretty good.  There was little digital noise in the pictures.  Of course the stars were a little blurred but the experiment was a success.  After that I went to bed.  We had to get up a little early the next morning to meet Terry at Shoneys.
