Dismall Falls

Alan Cressler, Jeff Moore

On our way to Pig Hole we stopped by Dismal falls to witness the waterfalls and to clean off our ropes.  I'd not expected to use my rope and therefore hadn't allotted the time to take it to the laundry mat during the week; I rarely wash rope by hand nowadays.  Dismal falls was about what I'd expected.  I'd seen pictures online when searching for places to visit in Jefferson National Forest, Virginia.  It wasn't high on my list but since it was so close to the road it was worth seeing.  We hung around the 15' waterfall cascade for awhile taking pictures.  I was excited to get to try out my new camera.  I'd received the camera on Thursday but really hadn't had any time to try it out since I left directly from work to travel to Virginia and it took about 7 hrs and 45 minutes before I arrived.  It should have taken 7 hours and 30 minutes but I was stuck in traffic outside Columbus for about 15 minutes because the interstate was filtered down to one lane due to construction.  I'd gotten 28.8 mpg on the way down which was good because my first fill-up cost $43.    Anyway, I got to play with my new Canon Digital Rebel XT for awhile.  After Alan finished taking pictures he washed our ropes and was soon asking for a stick since one of the ropes had slipped to the bottom of a 3' deep pool beyond his grasp.  After that we walked back up the hill, the waterfall is nearly roadside, and drove to Hamilton Cave.   To Hamilton Cave
